Two ladies who know the difference between pulkes and a pushke

From kvetching about work to cooking a kugel, Jewish words describe every aspect of our daily lives. The Word Mavens will entertain and engage us with their hilarious, fact filled look at Jewish holidays, customs, beloved foods, and more.

Award winning authors Joyce Eisenberg and Ellen Scolnic, The Word Mavens, have a hilarious and educational presentation for your group.

In their hour-long talk, The Word Mavens share the many stories and unusual facts they uncovered while researching their Dictionary of Jewish Words. Why Martha Stewart calls herself a maven, who is a shnorrer, and why seders today often include the frog song?

Their new book, The Whole Spiel: Funny essays about digital nudniks, seder selfies and chicken soup memories celebrates everything about being a member of The Tribe in the 21st century. In their essays, they kvell about their kids, celebrate the holidays, comment on current events and muddle through modern technology.

The Word Mavens entertaining and enlightening program is a big hit with audiences.  People laugh out loud and thank them for rekindling memories from their childhoods. Audiences enjoy hearing about modern shmendricks and shmeggegges, learning about wedding traditions and nod approvingly when their favorite Jewish foods, like mandelbread and brisket, get the recognition they deserve.

Joyce and Ellen have been applauded by audiences at JCCs, synagogues, book stores and more. They were the featured speakers at Jewish Book Fairs in three states and have always garnered outstanding reviews.
