Shabbat Out of the Box - Take 3!

  • Occurs 2nd Saturday of each month

Shabbat Out of the Box events are usually the second Saturday of each month.  For a complete printable schedule in pdf form, CLICK HERE.

Outdoor activities are weather for “in person” but all events will be accessed through zoom in case of inclement weather. For this reason and to plan, REGISTRATION is required by the Thursday prior to each event.

September: Shabbat Yoga!

WOKI Sponsored Shabbat Out of the Box

Date: September 11,  2021
Time: 10 am - 11:00 am 

During the Days of Awe, take some time to slow down and be fully engaged in the moment as Jett Ulaner Sarachek and Audrey Nolte lead us through gentle yoga set to prayers and music that will soothe the body and soul. Please bring a mat or heavy towel.

October: Walking Meditation

Date: October 9th, 2021
Time: 10:00 am -11:00 am

We often walk without awareness: preoccupied with making our to do list or thinking about the past or future. Join Ann Friedenheim sharing the practice of walking mindfulness as it is a perfect compliment to sitting meditation. No experience necessary. Bring a chair, towel or blanket to sit upon while we talk and comfortable shoes.

November: Hiking

Shabbat is a special time to enjoy nature and be grateful for the world around us. Join Melissa and Harvey Hakim for a vigorous hike as we get our heart rates up and notice the beauty of the world that surrounds us.

December: Card Making for our Elders

Date: December 4, 2021
Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am

In 2020, we brought Hanukkah cheer to more than 50 Jewish elders in the Lehigh Valley community. Join Lynda Pollack once again for a morning of fun, creativity, and kindness as we make Hanukkah cards that will be delivered to our Jewish seniors this year. Art supplies will be provided. 

Note: Women of KI will be making cookies to include with the cards. We invite you to participate in this as well.  Due to the early start of Hanukkah this year (November 28), this event will take place on the 1st Saturday of December.

February: Qi Gong

Date: Feburary 12, 2022
Time: 10:00 am - 11:15 am

Qi Gong is a set of ancient Chinese health exercises that use breath, postural alignment, meditation, self-massage and gentle movement.  The purpose of the practice is to harmonize the body, mind and spirit so the whole organism comes into a state of balance.  These practices are popular around the world and are utilized by people of all faith traditions.  We'll spend our time together with some history of Qi Gong and its role in Chinese medicine and then have a gentle practice so you can feel the benefits for yourself.

March: Art

Last year, art teacher Susan Hardy led our virtual Mandala creations workshop and several of the attendees’ beautiful creations were then featured in KI’s Super Seder Sacks. Join Susan in person this year as she leads us through our next artistic adventure! No art experience necessary; supplies will be provided.

April: Book Discussion

Date: April 9, 2022

The Color of Love: A story of a mixed race Jewish girl, by Marra B. Gad. Discussion is led by Patty Carlis and Maryann Snyder.

Marra Gad shares her personal story, including her experience of both racism and love in her family, in the Jewish community, and in the wider community. Her story is centered on her relationship with her white great aunt, whose racist remark gives rise to many years of estrangement, and whom she returns to help after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Heartbreaking at times and life affirming at others, this
is a story of identity, inheritance and choosing love.

April: Drumming with Moe Jerant

Date: April 23rd, 2022
Time: 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Come celebrate the New Year, melt away stress, and have fun with legendary drum circle facilitator Moe Jerant. Moe uses drumming to create community and an enjoyable, relaxing experience that is sure to let your inner instrumentalist come alive. It’s a rhythm party where there are no wrong notes and everyone has permission to make noise!

No prior musical experience is necessary. Drums and hand percussion instruments will be provided.

May: Yoga, Bike, Walk, Lunch and Brews Crews!

Pick any or all of our Shabbat Out of the Box activities for this last of the season gathering. We will gather to enjoy a Springtime Shabbat when the colors of green and flowering bushes and trees will shower us with the Spirit.

Begin with a gentle standing yoga practice to center and warm up followed by your choice of trail biking or walking. After our exercise, we will meet back at a pavilion for a bag lunch (everyone brings their own) and for those of us longing for an extended visit with new and old friends, a notorious Brews Crews gathering at a nearby brewery.
